Lego fans demand refunds from event compared to viral Willy Wonka shambles

A Lego event hailed the 'world’s largest brick festival' has been compared to Glasgow's Willy Wonka fiasco after visitors were greeted with a "bleak" and "empty" room.

Angry Lego fans are now demanding refunds after being left disappointed by the
"rip-off" Brick Fest Live experience at Birmingham's NEC over the bank holiday.

The event promised “a jaw-dropping collection of brick creations from across the globe”, which would be “mind-blowing” and amaze “adults and children”.

But attendees said the reality was a sparse offering of attractions inside an aircraft hanger-like room with one saying they'd seen "better displays in village halls”.

Others said the scenes reminded them of the now infamously disastrous 'Willy’s Chocolate Experience’ in Glasgow earlier this year and branded it "a scam".

Lego superfans are now demanding their money back after travelling far and wide to for the £35 a ticket event which left them "disgusted" and "underwhelmed".

The spectacle, which Lego does not sponsor, authorise or endorse, originates in the USA and describes itself as “the world’s largest hands-on brick event”.

She set to work designing and decorating the interior - first ordering tiny furniture before beginning to make her own.

One in four city-dwelling kids have never seen a deer or bird of prey

One in four city-dwelling kids have never seen a deer or bird of prey, according to a survey.

The poll of 1,000 city-based parents and their children aged six to 12 also found 21 per cent of youngsters haven't attempted to climb a tree, while 35 per cent have never slept in a tent.

Others haven't been camping (32 per cent), eaten a meal that was cooked on a camp stove (39 per cent), or gone crabbing in rockpools (41 per cent).

And 39 per cent of city children visit the countryside a maximum of just three times a year.

The research, commissioned by The Camping and Caravanning Club, comes as its new Club president, Hamza Yassin, celebrates National Camping and Caravanning Week by launching a new initiative to provide people with essential wildlife and camping experiences.

Hamza, who took more than 40 first-time campers to the countryside to teach them all about British wildlife, said: “I love going camping, connecting with nature and experiencing wildlife.

“It’s something I believe all children should have the opportunity to do – because let’s face it – they are the future when it comes to protecting our natural world.

“It was great to be able to introduce families to the joy of camping and show how it really puts you on nature’s doorstep – giving them the chance to learn about the incredible outdoors and all the benefits it can bring.”

The study also found 63 per cent of parents whose child has visited a rural area believe their youngster would like to experience it more.

With 46 per cent saying their kids often express an interest in visiting the countryside.

Of those who don’t visit rural areas as much as they would like to, 54 per cent cited ‘lack of time’ as the biggest reason for this.

While 36 per cent find distance the biggest barrier, according to the OnePoll.com data.

Despite this, 55 per cent of all parents claim their child prefers being outdoors rather than indoors – and 31 per cent believe them to be very interested in nature and wildlife.

Sabina Voysey, director general of The Camping and Caravanning Club, which is launching a competition to win camping experiences and equipment [https://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/competitions/hamzas-incredible-outdoors/], said: “Spending time in the outdoors through camping can be an amazing experience for children, giving them a sense of wonder and freedom.

“It’s a great way to connect with nature, see wildlife up close and learn skills such as map reading, cooking and pitching a tent. It’s beneficial in so many ways.

“The research shows that unfortunately not all children have easy access to the wonderful outdoors for various reasons, which is something we wanted to change through our work with our new president, Hamza.”

The research also found 88 per cent of parents believe it is important for their son or daughter to experience the great outdoors, with 87 per cent wishing they had more outdoor learning opportunities at school.

Penguin-obsessed Kerri was over-the-moon when she first spotted one of the birds waddling down the aisle after their best man, Daniel Welch, 36.

Daniel and groomsman, Craig Hindley-Poppitt, 34, had pretended the rings had been lost and ran out of the ceremony.

They returned with a bucket of fish and a penguin in tow - which waddled down the aisle carrying the rings on a pink ribbon tied around its neck.

The penguin waited patiently through the rest of the ceremony then joined the three others and the rest of the guests for the photos.

First time buyer "priced out" of London buys a 10-bed mansion in France for less

A first time buyer "priced out" of the London housing market bought a 10-bed mansion in France for less than a one-bed flat in London.

Natasha Marie, 28, worried she would never be able to secure a mortgage in London on a single income - so decided to look at properties abroad as she had always loved France.

After moving back to her family home in Greater London, with her parents in January 2023, Natasha was able to save a deposit for a first home.

After spending summer holidays in France growing up, Natasha decided it would be the perfect place to buy a home as she could get more for her money.

She decided to look elsewhere and settled on Occitanie, France - 759 miles away - where she found a 10-bedroom mansion on a one-acre plot for less than the average one-bedroom flat in London for £500k.

Natasha - who now does her corporate job remotely - moved in December 2023 and says the restoration of the mansion is a life-long project.

The property's ceiling is on the verge of collapse, it has black mould and a rat infestation.

Natasha is living in the mansion whilst she is resorting to it and using her savings to get the building back to its former glory.

Before long she had learnt to make all her own furniture - from tiny cushions to tiny toilets and and even a tiny fridge with a working light.

She began selling her hand-made furniture and taking commissions for whole rooms from other miniature enthusiasts - which can cost up to £3k and take up to two months to make.

Now it's her full-time job - but Beth said it doesn't feel like she's working at all, because she considers it her "passion".

Cheeky toddler calls dad by his real name to get what he wants

A "demanding" toddler has adopted a new tactic to get what he wants - by calling his dad by his real name.

One-year-old Archer has been following in his mum Stacey Jenkins' "bossy" footsteps by ordering his dad, Sam Philipps, 37, a general manager, around.

Stacey, 29, says little Archer began repeating her shouts of 'Sam' after hearing her call her husband when she needed something.

Now the confident toddler calls Sam's name whenever he needs a glass of water before bed or needs his nappy changed - instead of calling him dad.

The couple's baby monitor captured the excitable toddler calling out for his dad and Sam's bemused reaction.

Martyn Green, 37, began his mammoth trek on March 8 - 83 days ago - and has since walked 696 miles to reach his current point in Gillingham, Essex.

Martyn started this endeavour after he suffered serious injuries in a violent street robbery.

In December 2021, Martyn was stabbed four times in Torquay, Devon, by two men who were meeting with him to buy cannabis.

The incident left him shaken up and he became isolated.

After two long years, Martyn decided he couldn't carry on like this and set himself the challenge to walk the entire UK coastline with his three-year-old Collie mix, Rolo.
