Scottish Weather - Visitors take to the water at Luss, Loch Lomond

LUSS. Loch Lomond.

Scotland's 23C weekend weather. People enjoy the hot weather as they gather at Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond.

The latest forecast for Scotland has predicted some toasty temperatures and sunshine as people are told to 'enjoy the sun' while it's still around.

BBC Weather presenter Judith Ralston has revealed the latest forecast this morning and has confirmed that most of Scotland will be bathed in toasty weather by early afternoon. The expert has said that areas like Fort William and Pitlochry will see highs of 23C today, with the central belt experiencing a scorching 22C by mid-afternoon.

The forecaster also noted that some showers may appear across the most northern parts of Scotland and the eastern areas of the country will experience milder weather compared to the rest of the nation.

Crowds in Glasgow as Celtic fans mark title win

Celtic fans are preparing to celebrate in Glasgow after the club won its third successive Scottish Premiership title.

The trophy was carried into Saturday's game at Celtic Park by goalkeeper Joe Hart. The home side went on to beat St Mirren 3-2.

Glasgow city council said while celebrations are to be "savoured", they urge supporters to "respect the city" during the celebrations following littering and anti-social behaviour last year.

Police Scotland said they will have proportionate policing in place to maintain public safety and minimise disruption.

The league title had been decided before Saturday's game but the home match gives fans the chance to celebrate their win.

Writing on the social media site X, Glasgow city council said: "Glasgow is a football city - and proud to be home to some of the biggest teams in the game.

"Fans support their club, whatever the result - and when they win, celebrations are to be savoured. However, when things get out of hand there can be a negative impact on other Glaswegians and for visitors to our city.

"In recent year many people have felt uncomfortable and even unsafe when supporters have congregated in places like Trongate or George Square to celebrate.

"Residents and businesses have had to deal with the aftermath of littering, vandalism and other antisocial behaviour once the crowds have headed home.

"As this season reaches its conclusion over the next two weekends, we want everyone to be able to celebrate safely, responsibly and with consideration for others.

"Whoever you support, whatever the results - enjoy yourself but please respect the city."

Police and protesters clash at Thales Glasgow

GLASGOW. Thales Govan.

Police and pro-Palestinian protesters have clashed after a demonstration blocked the entrance to a military electronics factory in Glasgow.

Dozens of protesters gathered outside French company Thales’ site on Linthouse Road in Govan from 5am on Wednesday.

The demonstrators are demanding an immediate ceasefire and an end to the war in Gaza.

Police said a number of arrests had been made.

It comes at a time of mounting concern over the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The protest marks the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, Arabic for “catastrophe”, when 700,000 Palestinians fled or were driven out of what is now Israel before and during the war surrounding its creation in 1948.

More than twice that number have been displaced within Gaza since the start of the latest war, which was triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack into Israel.

UN agencies say 550,000 people, nearly a quarter of Gaza’s 2.3 million people, have been newly displaced in just the last week, as Israeli forces have pushed into the southern city of Rafah and re-invaded parts of northern Gaza.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.05am on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 police were called to a report of a demonstration within the grounds of a business premises on Linthouse Road, Govan, Glasgow.

“Officers are in attendance and a number of arrests have been made.”

Thales employs over 750 people across two main sites in Glasgow and Rosyth and said it invested over £140m in 2023 to the Scottish economy.

Iconic Linlithgow spire is gleaming golden once again following £400,000 restoration

An iconic church spire in Linlithgow, West Lothian, is once again gleaming golden following successful completion of a £400k restoration project that has saved it from potential collapse.

The Crown of Thorns spire of St Michael’s Parish Church – a unique and eye-catching piece of public sculpture, visible from both the M9 and the Edinburgh-Glasgow train line – has undergone thorough refurbishment to repair extensive rot in its structural timbers and replace the external cladding. The new cladding, a bronze alloy, returns the spire’s colour to the golden glow of the original structure when erected in 1964. This time, however, the gold is here to stay, aided by modern sealing technology designed to keep the Scottish weather at bay for decades to come.

Retired architect Brian Lightbody, who led the project, said “From investigative surveys, we knew that the timber structure under the external cladding had been badly affected by water ingress. But the extent of the damage uncovered as all the old cladding was removed has demonstrated that the only alternative to major restoration would have been removal of the entire Crown – in itself a demanding and costly project, and a deeply unattractive prospect for funders.
