Young women of Wales raise their voices for Peace

Young women of Wales raise their voices for Peace

Today (Friday 17 May 2024), Wales’ largest youth organisation, Urdd Gobaith Cymru continues the 102-year tradition of sharing an annual Peace and Goodwill Message by the young people of Wales with the world, by releasing ‘Gweithred yw Gobaith – Hope is an Action’ in a striking animated film.

Since 1922, the young people of Wales have thrown a spotlight on themes that are important to them whilst sharing a message of peace with the world. Every May a message has been shared without fail, initially through Morse code, then through the BBC World Service and more recently through digital media. Last year’s anti-racism Peace Message was seen by millions in 50 countries and supported by celebrities and hundreds of schools across Wales and beyond.

2024’s Peace Message honours the legacy of the Welsh Women’s Peace Petition of 1923-1924, signed by 400,000 women across Wales (said to be 7 miles in length). The Message states that “the challenge of our century’s next chapter” is the continuing need to advocate for peace and putting an end to atrocities, wars, and violence.

The young women responsible for creating this year’s Peace Message are Cardiff and Vale ESOL students (English for Speakers of Other Languages) who have found refuge and made Wales their home along with some of the Urdd’s female staff, apprentices, and volunteers.

First Minister Vaughan Gething said: “I am incredibly proud to support the Urdd’s message of peace and goodwill, which is of great significance all over the world. The message is a true reflection of the ambitions of young people in Wales and a call to action for world leaders, with the collective aim to strive for a better future for us all. More than ever, I encourage everyone to engage with the Urdd’s message and help make sure that the voices of our young people are heard around the globe.”

Spanish artist Maria Luisa Libertad Polanco is exhibiting a variety of her paintings and prints at The Mansion in Totnes until June 3.
The multi-faceted artist, who lived through Spain’s counterculture movement during the country’s transition to democracy in the 1970s, said the exhibition reflects her evolution as an artist in a town ideal for “misfits” like her.

Nine personnel from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service recently volunteered their time to deliver three fire engines and equipment as part of the largest ever UK Fire and Rescue Service convoy.
On Tuesday, April 23, a convoy of life saving fire and rescue service equipment and vehicles, coordinated by Fire Aid, began its journey to Ukraine to deliver this vital equipment to Ukrainian Firefighters.
The scale of the convoy was unprecedented, which comprised of 33 fire and rescue vehicles, two mechanics vehicles and more than 2,800 pieces of equipment that was donated by UK Fire and Rescue Services (FRSs) and supported by the Home Office.  Working with Fire Aid, Welsh and English FRSs have donated all the appliances, kit and equipment, which includes ladders, breathing apparatus sets, boats, fire and water personal protective equipment and safe working at height kit. 100 volunteers, drawn from FRSs and Fire Aid, participated in the convoy.
Nine personnel from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) volunteered their time to deliver three fire engines on behalf of the Service.  The convoy was organised through a partnership of 15 of the UK’s FRSs, which includes all three of the Welsh FRSs, as well as the National Fire Chiefs Council, National Resilience, Home Office, Fire Aid, and the Fire Industry Association.
MAWWFRS Deputy Chief Fire Officer Iwan Cray said:
“The events unfolding in Ukraine have provoked a strong sense of unity within FRS families across the world and MAWWFRS is pleased to be able to provide three fire engines that have reached the end of their serviceable lives with us.
These vehicles, along with the other vehicles in the convoy, will undoubtedly support stations across Ukraine who have lost their equipment and enable them to continue to support their communities.”
War in Ukraine
On February 24th, 2022, the Russian Federation launched an illegal invasion of Ukraine, dramatically escalating more than eight years of conflict to a full-scale war.
Ukrainian fire and rescue services have been decimated by the impact of the war and the demands placed upon them have skyrocketed.  To date, 396 firehouses have been destroyed, with 92 more now in occupied territory.  1,676 fire vehicles have been destroyed, 91 firefighters have been killed, with a further 349 injured, and five are held in captivity.  Meanwhile, the work of Ukrainian firefighters has grown significantly since the start of the war, with approximately 217,000 buildings destroyed or damaged, 18,270 fires eliminated and 4,975 people rescued.
