Baby Craig Millar memorial returns to community

A memorial stone commemorating the short life of an Edinburgh baby found on a Craigmillar pathway 23 years ago was reinstalled on Friday (April 26) - returning to the community after five years.

The infant, who was named by locals as Craig Millar, was discovered by a dog walker on the morning of March 11, 2001 between Harewood Road and Harewood Drive. The baby’s identity, and information about his parents, remains unknown.

The case shocked the Craigmillar community to its core - but the tragic incident also saw hundreds come together to raise money for the baby’s funeral service and headstone.

SS Explorer: Plans to transform historic ship into floating museum at Leith Docks

Plans to transform a historic Scottish vessel into an interactive floating museum in Edinburgh, have been unveiled at an event in Leith.

The SS Explorer, which has been berthed in Leith docks since 1996, is regarded as a pioneering vessel that made a significant contribution to climate science and biodiversity work. In service between 1956 to 1984, the ship allowed marine biologists to better understand sea temperatures and pollution, British fish breeding and fishing levels, and helped shape knowledge of oceanography and marine life.

The SS Explorer Preservation Society (SSEPS), who saved the ship from demolition in the mid 1990s, are now hoping to restore the research vessel to its former glory - and educate a new generation about Scotland’s marine heritage via a new floating museum and accompanying onshore interpretation centre.

The age old tradition, that goes back 3,000 years, was first revived for modern times in Edinburgh in 1988 and is now one the largest celebration of its kind in the world.

Ahead of the big celebration on April 30, members of the Beltane Fire Society were busking in the streets to raise money for their charity.

A former Edinburgh pub, which has lain vacant for the last four years, is being demolished this week ahead of plans to build new homes in the area.

Smithies Ale House on Eyre Place was built in the 1980s and served as a public house until its closure in March 2020. Last year the council approved plans for the demolition of the building and ‘clearance of the adjacent land’ including 22 trees to make way for 11 homes - nine maisonettes, two flats and a shared garden.
