Meet The Makers: Introducing new video series on Yorkshire craftspeople

Some of Yorkshire’s most inspiring craftspeople are being profiled in a special series of short films and magazine features thanks to a pioneering new collaboration.

The Yorkshire Post and Hull-based video production company Nova Studios have produced a new series called Meet The Makers, shining a light on some of the region’s most remarkable craftspeople.

Nova has created a series of high-quality short films and profile features, which will run on The Yorkshire Post website and in its award-winning Saturday Magazine from May 18. The work is accompanied in print by pictures taken by The Yorkshire Post’s skilled photographers.

Those featured in the series include a jeweller, a potter, a bicycle maker and a fashion designer.

The collaboration has been almost a year in the making after Nova pitched the idea to Yorkshire Post editor James Mitchinson.

Matt Stephenson, director of Nova, said: “With two newspaper-trained journalists on the team, we loved bringing together our journalistic and editorial skills with everything we know about digital film-making.

“The makers in the films we’ve produced really care about craft and tradition - and we’re very proud to be associated with them - their values reflect our own. There’s so much disposable product and content out there, it’s great to make films that are anything but disposable - we wanted to emphasise enduring quality, and to do that for the Yorkshire Post, a publication that is so embedded in the cultural life of our region.”

Catherine Scott, Yorkshire Post Magazine editor, said: “This has been an inspiring project to work on and we have been blown away by the quality of Nova’s work. The films they have produced are essentially The Yorkshire Post Magazine in video form - profiling the human stories of inspiring people from our area.

“We can’t wait for people to see the finished films and features over the coming weeks.”

Nightlife isn't dead: Bradford has loads going for it - don't give up

The Underground nightclub posted on facebook:

"We’re just not having it anymore - if all you post on Facebook is how rubbish things are, then stop being negative Nancy’s! Stop it right now! Sat at home, saying nobody wants to come to Bradford, there’s nothing here for them. Well -
⭐️ Last night people travelled from Manchester, Clitheroe & more to see Charlie Harper & Alex Wonk.
⭐️ Saturday night we literally had a coach load of people travel from Glasgow, and loads from Leeds, for Emilia Quinn & Robyn Red - all who stayed in Bradford hotels, and visited Bradford bars and restaurants.
⭐️ Thursday night Savanna Woods travelled from America to come perform here on her UK Tour, then stayed out drinking in the city centre after.
Don’t be a grumpy gus - Bradford actually has loads going for it, and those who do travel here tell us how much they have loved their stay. Venues like us, Nightrain, The 1 in 12 Club Bradford and more are constantly putting on great events that draw people into the city centre, and these people have a good time, in spite of your negativity. So imagine how great things could be if the city centre (and beyond) businesses had your support?
Sorry that we appear to have gone full Nigel - but sometimes you need to ‍♀️‍♀️

What next for relegated Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town plus Leeds United and Hull City's promotion chances - The YP FootballTalk Podcast

On this week’s podcast, YP football writers Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to discuss the relegation of Sheffield United – confirmed with a 5-1 defeat at Newcastle United. Where did it go wrong for the Blades and where do they go from here?

On a similar theme, Huddersfield Town are also heading down – save for some goalscoring miracle – after a 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City effectively condemned them to relegation to League One. Is Andre Breitenreiter the man to lead them back up or will he make way for yet another head coach?

Staying in the Championship the team also assess the respective promotion hopes of Leeds United and Hull City.

Excitement as first Peregrine Falcon eggs hatch on the Parkinson Building at the University of Leeds

Excitement as first Peregrine Falcon eggs hatch on the Parkinson Building at the University of Leeds

Paul Wheatley: "The first egg has hatched of the Peregrine Falcons that nest on the Parkinson Building at the University of Leeds. Hot on the heels of hatching seen in urban Peregrine nests in Wakefield and Sheffield over the last few days, the first signs of hatching at Leeds were seen last night. Throughout the morning the tiny pips in the egg gradually got bigger, glimpsed when the adult birds interrupted the incubation of their eggs. This afternoon the first egg hatched and two more eggs already showed signs of hatching. The video shows the Tiercel, or male Peregrine, moving off the eggs to make way for the Falcon, or female bird, to take over in keeping the eggs and chick warm. Last year, the eggs failed to hatch, so Peregrine watchers have been excited to see the birds progress a little closer to breeding success. In nearby Bradford, a new project is installing nest boxes at different locations, with hope that Peregrines will use them to nest in 2025."
