On May 19, Red Lobster confirmed in
a statement that the company has filed for
voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Florida. .
NBC reports that the largest seafood chain in
the United States said that filing for Chapter 11 will , "drive operational improvements, simplify the business
through a reduction in locations, and pursue a sale
of substantially all of its assets as a going concern.".
In a so-called stalking horse arrangement, Red Lobster
will sell the entire business to a new entity that is
completely owned and controlled by lenders. .
According to the company, lenders have
provided $100 million in financial commitments
to fund the chain's ongoing operations.

NBC reports that the company's bankruptcy
petition lists Red Lobster's assets at a value
between $1 billion and $10 billion.
The chain stressed that despite closing around
99 locations across the U.S., remaining locations
will remain open during the bankruptcy process.
The company added that it has been , "working with vendors to ensure
that operations are unaffected.".

The 56-year-old chain was founded back in 1968.
By 2019, Red Lobster had expanded to include
nearly 700 locations across the country.

under a growing debt load after failing to regain
a foothold following the COVID-19 pandemic.

고가의 가전제품을 빌린 뒤 중고 거래로 팔아넘겨 수입 억 원을 챙긴 이른바 '렌탈깡' 조직이 경찰에 붙잡혔습니다.

급전을 미끼로 저신용자들의 명의를 빌려 제품을 빌린 뒤, 유니폼까지 챙겨 입고 제품을 배달했습니다.

윤웅성 기자의 보도입니다.

경찰이 한 남성에게 미란다 원칙을 고지하고 수갑을 채웁니다.

집안에선 팔고 남은 각종 전자제품의 필터 수십 개가 쏟아집니다.

고가의 가전제품을 빌린 뒤 중고로 팔아넘겨 매각 대금을 챙긴, 이른바 '렌탈깡' 사기 조직 주거지에 경찰이 들이닥친 겁니다.

이들은 대구와 인천, 천안 등에서 일반적인 대출이 어려운 저신용자들에게 돈을 준다고 모집해, 고가의 렌탈 상품을 빌리게 했습니다.

이후 제품들은 중고로 처분하고, 일부만 명의를 빌려준 저신용자들에게 나눠준 뒤 차액을 챙겼습니다.

이런 수법으로 3개 조직이 가로챈 돈은 26억 원에 달합니다.

법인 명의의 렌탈 제품은 회수나 추적이 어렵다는 점도 악용했습니다.

저신용자들의 명의로 유령 법인 100여 개를 세워 제품만 받고 해산하는 수법으로 5년 넘게 범행을 이어왔습니다.

[이승하 / 서울경찰청 형사기동대 1팀장 : 명의 대여자들도 이들이 범행을 한다는 것을 알면서도 가담했고, 그리고 수익을 받았기 때문에 모두 적극적으로 가담했다고 보면 됩니다.]

이들은 렌탈 업체에 위장 취업을 해, 범행에 필요한 제품 설치 지식을 익히기도 했습니다.

이들은 중고 거래 과정에서 의심을 피하기 위해 이렇게 직접 렌탈업체 유니폼까지 입고 배달하는 치밀함을 보였습니다.

또 제품 안쪽, 고유 번호가 적힌 스티커까지 미리 제거해 추적을 피했습니다.

경찰은 사기 혐의로 조직 총책 등 5명을 구속하고 39명을 불구속 입건했습니다.

또 값싼 중고 제품을 구매했다가 범행으로 유통된 게 확인될 경우, 제품을 반납해야 할 수도 있다며 소비자들의 주의를 당부했습니다.
